QUOTES:

  • ’…sometimes, when you lose your happiness, it’s best to look for it the same way you’d look for anything else …. by retracing your steps’ (p23).
  • Apparently the completion of long-term goals often leads to depression. It’s the journey, not the destination, babe… (p23).
  • ’It’s not your job to make me happy, okay? You can’t make anyone happy. I’m happy just because you exist, and that’s as much of my happiness as you have control over’ (p303).

Preparing to Read “War and Peace” by Leo Tolstoy

As I sit down to prepare for the literary adventure of a lifetime, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation. “War and Peace” by Leo Tolstoy is a monumental work, a masterpiece of world literature that has captured the imagination of readers for generations. It’s a novel that spans the breadth of human experience, weaving together history, philosophy, and the intricacies of human relationships. I’ve heard that it’s not an easy read, but I’m determined to dive in and immerse myself in this timeless classic.

Preparation is key when tackling a literary juggernaut like “War and Peace.” I know that this won’t be a casual read, and I want to give the novel the attention and respect it deserves. To set the stage for my journey through Tolstoy’s epic, I’ve decided to take a thoughtful and methodical approach to my reading experience.

First and foremost, I’m committed to arming myself with the tools I need to fully engage with the text. I plan to annotate the book extensively, using sticky notes, highlighters, and pens to mark passages, jot down thoughts, and ask questions. This interactive approach will allow me to actively participate in the narrative, to engage deeply with the characters and themes, and to capture my own reactions and interpretations as I progress through the story.

Familiarize Yourself with the Historical Context: “War and Peace” is set during the Napoleonic Wars and provides a detailed depiction of Russian society at the time. It might be helpful to brush up on the history of this period to better understand the backdrop against which the novel is set.

Take Your Time: “War and Peace” is a lengthy novel with a large cast of characters, so it’s not the kind of book you can rush through. Set aside dedicated time for reading and try to pace yourself so you can fully absorb the story and the characters’ developments.

In addition to annotating the text, I want to create a character map to help me navigate the complex web of relationships in “War and Peace.” Tolstoy’s novel is populated by a vast array of characters, each with their own distinct personalities, motivations, and connections to one another. By visualizing these relationships in a character map, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of the interplay between characters and the ways in which their lives intersect and influence each other throughout the novel.

As I embark on this literary endeavor, I also recognize the value of seeking out supplemental resources to enhance my reading experience. I plan to familiarize myself with the historical context of the novel, as well as Tolstoy’s own life and philosophical beliefs. Understanding the backdrop against which “War and Peace” unfolds will undoubtedly enrich my comprehension of the narrative and the themes it explores.

I am under no illusion that this will be an easy or quick undertaking. “War and Peace” demands time and patience, and I am prepared to give it both. I understand that there will be moments of confusion, complexity, and perhaps even frustration, but I am eager to embrace the challenge and immerse myself in Tolstoy’s world.

In preparing to read “War and Peace,” I am not only setting out to conquer a literary classic; I am also embarking on a personal journey of growth and discovery. I hope to emerge from this experience with a deeper appreciation for the power of storytelling, a heightened understanding of the human condition, and a renewed sense of the enduring relevance of great literature.

I am ready to dive into the rich tapestry of “War and Peace,” to engage with its characters, wrestle with its ideas, and savor the profound insights that Tolstoy offers. This will be a reading experience like no other, and I can’t wait to see where it will take me. Let the adventure begin.

Alif

by Umera Ahmed

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

A Spellbinding Journey of Redemption and Self-Discovery

Well I am a 90’s kid and many of us have grown reading Umera Ahmed. The name that is synonymous to some unforgettable stories with almost immortal characters. Well right from Haasil to La’Haasil, from Meri Zaat Zara e benishaan to Shehr e Zaat, and many others. In the realm of literature, there are few works that possess the power to captivate readers, challenge conventional norms, and leave an indelible mark on their souls. Umera Ahmed’s masterpiece, “Alif,” is undeniably one of those rare gems. With its intricate storytelling, profound exploration of human emotions, and thought-provoking themes, Alif takes readers on an epic journey of redemption, self-discovery, and the quest for truth. Through the eyes of unforgettable characters, Umera Ahmed weaves a tapestry of words that will resonate with readers long after the final page is turned.

1. “The only way to escape from the darkness is to search for the light within ourselves.” – Alif

Umera Ahmed seamlessly intertwines the spiritual and the worldly in Alif, creating a narrative that transcends conventional boundaries. The story revolves around the lives of Alif, a disillusioned young filmmaker Qalb e Momin, and Momina, a popular actress torn between fame and her spiritual quest. As their paths converge, a mesmerizing tale unfolds, exploring the intricacies of faith, love, and the journey towards self-discovery. Umera’s prose shines with poetic brilliance, effortlessly evoking emotions and provoking introspection.

2. “Sometimes, the greatest battles we wage are the ones within our own souls.” – Alif

One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its profound exploration of human emotions and the inner conflicts we all face. The characters in Alif are flawed, vulnerable, and beautifully human. As they grapple with their fears, doubts, and past mistakes, readers are reminded of their own struggles and are compelled to reflect on their own lives. Ahmed’s masterful character development allows us to empathize with each character’s journey, making their triumphs and failures all the more poignant.

3. “In the realm of storytelling, truth can be found in the spaces between fiction and reality.” – Alif

Alif delves into the power of storytelling and the blurred lines between fiction and reality. Umera Ahmed skillfully uses Alif’s passion for filmmaking as a metaphor for exploring the nature of truth. Through the medium of film, Ahmed highlights how narratives can shape our perception of reality, and how a well-told story has the ability to touch hearts, challenge beliefs, and transform lives. This theme adds an extra layer of depth to the novel, making it not just a tale of personal growth but also a commentary on the power of art and storytelling.

4. “The beauty of love lies in its ability to bridge the gaps between different worlds.” – Alif

Love, in all its forms, is a central theme in Alif. From romantic love to the love between family members and even the love of God, Umera Ahmed explores the transformative power of this universal emotion. Through Alif and Momina’s complex relationship, the novel examines the barriers that love can overcome and the healing it can bring. Ahmed’s portrayal of love is nuanced, realistic, and deeply moving, reminding readers of the profound connections we share as humans. All my most favorite scene of the novel is the dance sequence featuring Taha performing Rumi Dance on the stage and Husn e Jahan dancing at the back of the stage.

“This, my friends, is called the Sama—the dance of the whirling dervishes. From this day on, dervishes of every age will dance the Sama. One hand pointed up to the sky, the other hand pointing down to earth, every speck of love we receive from God, we pledge to distribute to the people.” (40 Rules of Love by Elif Shafaq). I felt like Taha and Husn e Jahan were doing the very same thing. Spreading love all around, the love they have gained from the CREATOR.

When I was reading “Alif” I stumbled upon a sentence that I reread a hundred times because that’s how it struck me, “zindagi kabhi humay badshah nahi honay deti, sab kuch de kar bhi humay faqeer hi rakhti hai. Kisi na kisi cheez se mehroom, kisi kay liyen tarasta hoa”.

Umera Ahmed’s Alif is a literary masterpiece that will leave readers spellbound. With its beautifully woven narrative, profound exploration of human emotions, and thought-provoking themes, the novel transcends traditional storytelling boundaries. Alif challenges readers to question

Future Partner

Dear future partner,

I want you to understand that I’m not always loveable. Sometimes I’m moody and sometimes I’m silent when I’m too sad.

I want you to accept my spontaneous crazy moments that come out of nowhere.

I want you to embrace my bad moments and when I push everyone away.
You stay.

I want you to know that i overlove that’s why I expect too much. So don’t let me down.

KING OF PRIDE

by Ana Huang
⭐️⭐️⭐️✨/5 (3.5/5)

King of Pride, the second book in The Sin Series, is a captivating romance novel that skillfully balances passionate attraction with the individual growth of its characters. With the highly anticipated third installment on the horizon, this book leaves readers eagerly anticipating what lies ahead.

One of the strongest aspects of “King of Pride” is the chemistry between the characters. Huang masterfully crafts a connection between the protagonists that is both palpable and electric. The sparks that fly between them are undeniable and serve as a driving force throughout the story. Readers will find themselves fully invested in their journey, rooting for their love to triumph over the challenges they face.

Huang’s work apart is her ability to strike a delicate balance between the romance and the individual development of her characters. While the chemistry and physical attraction take center stage, she ensures that each character receives the attention they deserve to grow and evolve. As the story progresses, readers witness the depth of the characters’ personalities and their emotional journeys, making them feel more authentic and relatable.

In terms of plot, “King of Pride” allows the romance to unfold gradually, keeping readers engaged and eager to discover what comes next. Huang’s pacing is well-executed, and she skillfully weaves together moments of intense passion with quieter, introspective scenes. This dynamic keeps the story engaging and prevents it from becoming monotonous.

While the romance and character development shine brightly, some readers may find themselves craving a bit more depth in the overall plot. Although the focus on the central relationship is captivating, the external conflicts and subplots could have been further explored to add additional layers to the story. However, this does not detract significantly from the overall enjoyment of the book.

As a passionate reader, it’s understandable that you are eagerly anticipating the release of the third book in The Sin Series. Ana Huang’s ability to create characters that capture readers’ attention and her skillful handling of their individual growth make the series an exciting prospect for romance enthusiasts. With the groundwork laid in “King of Pride,” readers can look forward to further exploration of the characters’ relationships and personal journeys in the upcoming installment for Dominic and Alessandra’s failing marriage and, subsequently, their book, King of Greed. I haven’t read a ton of second-chance stories, and none where the characters are already married, but I’m certainly ready for plenty of groveling. Alessandra has already endeared herself to me, and I can’t wait for her to reclaim the relationship she once had with her husband.

In conclusion, “King of Pride” by Ana Huang skillfully combines passionate romance with the growth and development of its characters. The undeniable chemistry between the protagonists and the attention given to their individual journeys make for an engaging read. While the plot could have delved deeper into external conflicts, the book remains a highly enjoyable installment in The Sin Series, leaving readers eager for more.
